Spring Glamping

Spring Glamping in Ontario, Canada

The sun is rising a little earlier, trees are budding with new life, and birds are migrating home from their winter retreat. In short, Spring has returned to Ontario. Snow is still on the ground, but the weather is gradually warming, bringing back the greenery we’ve longed for all winter. After months of hibernating at home, it’s time to head outdoors to reconnect with nature. Escaping the dreary city for a Glamping getaway is the perfect way to do that.

If you think it’s too cold to camp in spring, you would be wrong. Thanks to glamping, or “glamorous camping”, camping is no longer confined to the summer months. Cold nights and inclement weather aren’t a concern when you have a warm bed in a heated glamping pod waiting for you. Glamping is the perfect way to ease yourself back into the outdoors, while still enjoying the comforts of a luxury hotel. If you are ready to get out of the house this spring, here are some of the best things to do in the Grey County area of Ontario.

Maple Syrup Festivals

If there is one thing Canadians are known for, it’s maple syrup. And March is the start of syrup season! As the sap in sugar maple trees starts to flow up from the roots, sugar shacks begin popping up all over Canada.

During the first weekend of April, the Ontario Maple Weekend features activities and events at Sugarbushes all across Ontario. Enjoy sleigh rides, sugar-making demonstrations, and snack on all kinds of maple-flavored treats from taffy on snow to maple coffee.

In Town

If you are looking for a cozier, “small-town” experience, look no further than the towns around the Georgian Bay in the Great Lakes region. The small towns of Meaford, Thornbury, and Collingwood feature all the comforts of coastal life. Each town has unique charms that make them picturesque at any time of the year. However, watching these towns come back to life in the spring has its own magic.

Some of our favorite local spots:

  • Grandma Lambe’s: Cute isn’t enough to describe Grandma Lambe’s. This apple orchard and bakery has been a local favorite since it opened in the 1940s. The flagship store in Meaford is open year-round, but visiting in spring when the apple blossoms are in full bloom is a special treat.
  • Good Grief Coffee: For a more modern vibe, this cafe is the place for you. Founded in 2019, they weathered the storm of 2020 and came out as a valued part of the Thornbury community. Today they offer house-made pastries and top-quality coffee in their vibrant cafe.
  • Thornbury Bakery: For something a little more substantial, visit the Thornbury Bakery Cafe. A very different “vibe” from Good Grief, Thornbury is a great spot to stop for a full lunch.

Regardless of which eatery you stop at, we recommend picking up a little extra to enjoy back at your glamping dome.

Vineyards’ Open Season

If you like wine, you’ll be happy to know that the local wineries open for the season around April. After the bleak and dreary winter, seeing the fresh green leaves bud on the vine is a refreshing change. Unlike the summer and autumn when wineries are crowded and busy, spring in the vineyard is a much more restorative experience.

Some local wineries worth a tour and tasting are:

While you are there, consider picking up a bottle or two to take back to your glamping dome for a perfect night.

Time Outdoors

It wouldn’t be “glamping” if we didn’t mention some outdoor activities. While ski season in nearby Blue Mountain is ending and the Marinas of Georgian Bay haven’t reached their peak, there’s still a lot of nature to enjoy.

  • Hiking: There are many fantastic hiking trails to explore in the Grey-Bruce region, from forests and waterfalls to lighthouses and coastlines. You can check out our Travel Guide to see some of our favorite hiking spots. Watching the world spring back into life after its winter sleep is a great way to fight off the winter blues. The best part about glamping is that you can enjoy your spring hike knowing that there’s a nice hot shower waiting for you when you get back.

  • Bird Watching: One of the most relaxing things to do in nature is listen to the birds sing. This is especially true during the breeding season in spring. Starting as early as February, migratory birds make their way back north to build their nests. All throughout the season, you can hear their melodious calls ringing through the trees. Quiet Time at the Dome

If you are interested in glamping in Ontario this spring, consider Back Forty Glamping your “dome away from home”.

Each of our private domes is heated with a propane fireplace or in-floor heating to keep you warm on cool spring mornings. The skylights in the roof or large front windows are perfect for stargazing on clear nights. If the weather is nice, enjoy an evening in your private hot tub, or make gourmet
s’mores by the fire. If the weather is bleak, have a movie night on a projected screen with a basket of goodies. At the end of the night, curl up on your king-size bed for a restorative sleep.

Shake off the winter blues and come glamping in Ontario this spring. Experience, connect, and restore in nature.
